Tints, tones and shades all have different meanings. In the diagram, the top row shows white being added progressively from left to right. This produces what is commonly known as tints of the same basic hue. The second row shows black being added progressively from left to right. This produces a range of darkening shades of the same hue. The bottom row illustrates the effect of adding grey progressively, again from left to right. The result is a range of tones of the same hue.
