The City and Guilds photography courses provide the basic skills required to make photography a profession. It is usually possible to enroll on courses of this type without any previous experience or photography-related qualifications, and studying can be undertaken remotely through distance learning.
Practical and theoretical courses in colour, black-and-white and general photography can be completed in one year on a part-time or evenings basis. Some also include a module on the history of photography, but studio work is not normally covered. Successful students can choose to continue their studies through A-level and Higher National Certificate courses. Students generally need access to a 35mm camera, and must bear the cost of film and associated processing and printing. Courses are likely to include visits to locations and galleries, and some incorporate weekends away in the UK or Europe.
