Knowledge of the particular species being photographed is invaluable. It helps a photographer to understand where a target species may be found, to identify the relevant food plants, and to identify the optimum circumstances and time to work. In general, the best times of day to work are the early morning and late afternoon. The light is often warm and soft, and many insects are still emerging from sleep and hence rather sluggish in their movements. These factors combine to make a good shot somewhat just a little easier.
