Digital photo frames offer a simple and modern way to display a range of favourite photographs in the home without having to print them. The devices are available in numerous sizes and styles, and at a variety of prices.

Some digital photo frames accept only images in JPEG format which may limit their use to pictures taken on a digital cameras or uploaded from a computer. Others accept images in other formats including mobile phone formats. Images are uploaded typically by inserting a memory card from a digital camera, but some brands do have internal storage. However, there are other limitations. The format of the display may not fit exactly the format of the uploaded images, so the pictures may have to be stretched in one dimension to fill the frame. Alternatively, black edges may be displayed.

Most frames of this type display the images as a rotating slide show. The display period for each slide is normally programmable, and the transition effect used during picture changes may be selectable.
